Things to assess before you migrate your workloads to Microsoft Azure Database Platforms

With a clear understanding of the current workload that you have and the initial migration plan you prepared, based on the Microsoft Azure services and your business and technical requirements, we need to start the technical steps of assessing the current workload, what blockers we should fix before migrating to Azure and the steps required for the migration process.

Microsoft provides us with two free tools that can guide the migration process based on the assessment it will perform on the current workload.

The first tool is the Azure Database Migration Guide tool, which provides complete guidance for the migration process with all information we need to consider before, during, and after the migration process (Pre-migration, Migration, and Post-migration).

The Azure Database Migration Guide tool can be accessed online using the https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/data-migration/ URL address.

On this site, you need first to choose the source database platforms that you need to migrate from and the database platform that you plan to migrate to; then, it will provide you with a complete plan for that migration.

The second Microsoft free tool that you can use to assess the migration process is The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit. This tool requires you to download it from Microsoft Download Center and install it on your machine to start using it.

MAP tool will help check that the current version can be migrated to Microsoft Azure, providing you with all inventories of the current servers and applications, assessments and reports you can use in your migration plan.
